Scotland's newest young fine art star, Frank To, will next month exhibit a selection of his latest work at the renowned Albemarle Gallery in Mayfair, London.
Frank To is a young Glasgow-based
artist whose unique painting technique is garnering him international
recognition as a leading contemporary figurative painter amongst art
critics and high profile collectors alike, including actor Patrick
Stewart (of Star Trek fame) and New York based Michel Witmer, who hangs
To's paintings alongside those of Picasso, Dine and Warhol.
In a
shared show with Richard Harrison, To will exhibit six pieces at the
Albemarle, including: Iron Man (oil on canvas, 60cm x 90cm); In The End
(oil on canvas, 102cm x 143cm) Within The Shadows (oil on canvas, 110cm
x 80cm) and Yggdrasill (oil on canvas, 183cm x 183cm).
The show
marks the second time that To has exhibited at Albemarle. He said,
"Following my first exhibition there in 2007, I devoted most of last
year to working on paintings for this exhibition, which will herald the
unveiling of my new painting style.
To said, "I'm delighted to
be given the opportunity to show my latest work alongside Richard
Harrison, who inspired me as a student. Richard and I share a
fascination with mythology, which influences our art. Whilst our
paintings share a haunting and aggressive quality, whereas Richard's
painting technique is characterised by thick use of paint, my own style
uses much thinner layers of paint on canvas."
To's painting
technique is inspired by a story attributed to the Renaissance
sculptor, Michelangelo. It was said Michelangelo could visualise the
human form within a block of marble. To, similarly, teases out figures
from initially abstract images. Other influences on his work are drawn
from literary sources, such as the Greek philosophers Plato and
Aristotle.
Arguably To's most famous collector is Patrick
Stewart, who said, "I have known Frank To's work since his degree show
at Huddersfield University and have several of his paintings, including
a quite powerful and unusual portrait of myself. I like Frank's work
for its thoughtfulness, intensity, use of colour and mature technique."
Located
in London's West End, Mayfair, the Albemarle Gallery profiles
contemporary paintings and sculpture by established and emerging
English, Scottish, Irish, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Croatian,
South African, Russian, American and Canadian artists. Focusing on
contemporary figurative, trompe l'oeil, still life and hyper realism,
the gallery also exhibits abstract and surreal works.
The exhibition runs from 5-28 March 2009.
